Where can you ride an e-bike in Ottawa?
E-bikes that look like regular bicycles can ride City of Ottawa bike paths and the NCC's Capital Pathway along the canal and rivers (20 km/h max on NCC paths); scooter-style e-bikes are not allowed on either, and the NCC also bans devices powered only by a throttle. E-bikes can't go on OC Transpo bus bike racks, and OC Transpo's bike page does not say whether e-bikes may ride the O-Train. Cycling on sidewalks is banned unless signs allow it.

What we could not confirm yet
- E-bikes on the O-Train: OC Transpo's bike page does not say whether two-wheeled e-bikes may be carried on board; ask OC Transpo (613-560-5000).
- Bus racks: OC Transpo's page allows only non-motorized bikes, but the Transit By-law (s. 19(14)(b), Internet Archive copy 2025-08-25) only bars putting an e-bike that exceeds the rack's size and weight limit on a rack; OC Transpo's stricter rule is shown. Ask OC Transpo.
- ottawa.ca is blocked to automated access, so 'Cycling and the law' (snapshot 2026-09-15) and the Transit By-law (snapshot 2025-08-25) were read from Internet Archive copies; check https://ottawa.ca/en/parking-roads-and-travel/road-safety/cyclists/cycling-and-law and the Transit By-law page on ottawa.ca by hand for the current text.
- City parks away from the pathways: the Parks and Facilities By-law bans 'motorized vehicles' (anything not muscle-powered) in parks except where designated, without naming e-bikes; ask 3-1-1.
- Gatineau Park mountain-bike trails and NCC Greenbelt natural trails: no NCC e-bike rule found for them; contact the NCC (613-239-5000).
