Where can you ride an e-bike in Edmonton?
Edmonton bans riding e-bikes on sidewalks (except signed shared pathways and riders 16 and under), in transit stations and on transit vehicles, with $250 fines; on shared pathways e-bike riders must yield to pedestrians, ring before passing and keep a reasonable speed. ETS allows bikes on the LRT at all times of day and on bus bike racks if they weigh under 25 kg, and asks e-bike riders to take the battery off if possible and carry it on the bus. Rental e-bikes are limited to shared pathways, bike lanes and roads of 50 km/h or less and are kept off park trails the City doesn't maintain.

Can you take an e-bike on transit in Edmonton?
Bikes and e-bikes on buses, trains and ferries: the rules for ETS buses (bike racks), Edmonton LRT (ETS) and Transit stations and vehicles (Public Spaces Bylaw s. 79).
| Agency | Rule | Season | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| ETS buses (bike racks) | Bikes on the front rack must weigh less than 25 kg (55 lb) and fit: wheelbase up to 44 in, tires up to 2.35 in wide, wheels 20 to 29 in. Two bikes per rack, first come, first served. With an e-bike, ETS asks you to remove the battery if possible and take it on the bus; if it can't be removed, the e-bike may still use the rack if it meets these limits. Motorized bikes are not allowed on the rack (ETS cites weight and gasoline). Routes 560, 747 and On Demand buses have no racks, and bikes are not allowed on regional routes that run on highways outside Edmonton. | Not stated | Bikes and E-scooters on ETS, City of Edmonton (Edmonton Transit Service), checked |
| Edmonton LRT (ETS) | Bicycles are allowed on the LRT at all times of day and ride free with a regular fare. Walk your bike in stations, use the middle doors, and stand beside it holding on. ETS can refuse bikes when trains or platforms are crowded, such as before or after a concert or football game. ETS's page does not list separate e-bike rules for the LRT. | Not stated | Bikes and E-scooters on ETS, City of Edmonton (Edmonton Transit Service), checked |
| Transit stations and vehicles (Public Spaces Bylaw s. 79) | You may not ride a bike, e-bike or e-scooter on a transit vehicle or in a transit station, except on a shared pathway. Fine: $250. | Not stated | Public Spaces Bylaw 20700 (Part XIV - Vehicles, ss. 77-82), City of Edmonton, checked |

What we could not confirm yet
- ETS doesn't state e-bike weight or battery rules for the LRT (its rack rules are for buses); confirm with ETS or 311.
- No City page says whether private e-bikes may ride unpaved river valley trails; the 'not on park trails not maintained by the City' line is on the shared (rental) e-bike page. Ask 311 or Park Rangers.
- Sidewalk exception: the 2025 Public Spaces Bylaw says riders aged 16 and under; older City pages still say bikes with wheels of 50 cm or less. The bylaw is used here.
- The Century Park bike storage room was described as a one-year 2023 pilot; check with ETS whether it is still open.
