Can you take an e-bike on transit in Calgary?
Bikes and e-bikes on buses, trains and ferries: the rules for Calgary Transit buses and community shuttles (bike racks) and CTrain (Calgary Transit).
| Agency | Rule | Season | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calgary Transit buses and community shuttles (bike racks) | E-bikes can use the bike racks if they weigh 75 lb (34 kg) or less, both tires drop fully into the wheel pockets and the support arm fits over the wheel. Racks hold two bikes on buses and one on the community shuttles that have racks (shuttle racks in daylight only), first come, first served, at no extra cost. Bikes are not allowed inside buses or shuttles (folded folding bikes excepted). Gas or diesel vehicles are not permitted. | Not stated | Bikes on Transit, Calgary Transit, checked |
| CTrain (Calgary Transit) | Bikes are allowed on CTrains at all times, one bike per person and only if there is room (two bikes per section of a car). Walk your bike on the platform, use the doors marked for bikes (not the front door of the first car), stand with your bike and give space to seniors and riders with disabilities, mobility devices or strollers. Calgary Transit's CTrain rules speak of bikes only; an older City page says pedal-assist e-bikes may ride Calgary Transit during the same hours as other bicycles (it still calls these non-peak hours). | Not stated | CTrain Bike Pilot (rules for bikes on CTrains), Calgary Transit, checked Bikes on Transit, Calgary Transit, checked Sharing the road with cyclists, City of Calgary, checked |

What we could not confirm yet
- Calgary Transit's own pages don't mention e-bikes on CTrains. An older City page says pedal-assist e-bikes are allowed on transit only in the same non-peak hours as bikes and on bus racks only under 55 lb; Calgary Transit now allows bikes on CTrains at all times and e-bikes up to 75 lb on bus racks. Confirm with Calgary Transit.
- Bylaw 11M2019 defines 'bicycle' to include a provincial 'power bicycle', but three City pages say power-on-demand (throttle) e-bikes are not allowed on pathways; the City's stated rule is used. Check with 311 if you ride a throttle e-bike.
- Natural-surface trails in City parks (e.g. Nose Hill Park): no City page found with an e-bike rule beyond the pathway rule; check calgary.ca or 311.
- The City's Pathways and trails page also says "All pathways and trails are for non-motorized use with the exception of powered wheelchairs", while the same page and two other City pages say pedal-assist e-bikes are allowed on pathways; the e-bike-specific rule is used here.
